Terri Houston, cordially known as “Ms. H,” spoke to our business fraternity Monday, March 28th. Ms. H began her presentation in a low monotone voice and quickly lost the attention of every brother in the room. She then exploded in a boisterous tone, leaving us all startled and confused as to what was going on.

“How would you like it if I talked in that monotone voice the whole time?” Ms. H said.

Ms. H’s talk revolved around SPICE, an abbreviation of her own creation that outlines key skills in professional presentation.

S: Sensation
P: Presentation
I: Information
C: Communication
E: Expectation

Ms. H told us that we’ll make thousands of impressions every day and it’s up to us how we manage those. She advised us to be hyper-aware of our clothing and what it says about us. Additionally, she gave us a few tricks to use when networking:

  1. Mention three key things about yourself when you make a new connection: your name, where you’re from, and something unique about you.
  2. Let the person in the position of power let go of a handshake first.
  3. Never wipe your hands on your pants after a handshake!

Ms. H was not only incredibly informative, but enjoyable to listen to. Thanks for coming to AKPsi, Ms. H!
